So you've got a bathroom vanity completely covered in skin care products, and what do you do? Well, if you're like most of us, you probably slather some creams on your face and move on with your life. But what you're missing here is so very important: the order in which you apply your skin care products does in fact effect they way they work for you and your skin.
According Susana Scott, an Aesthetician with nearly a decade of experience, applying your skin care products in the proper order ensures that your skin receives all the benefits of the ingredients in each product. Let's say you applied a cream-based product first, followed by a serum. Because of the cream's consistency and chemical components, it would prevent the serum from reaching the skin.
Here is the proper way to apply your skin care products:
STEP ONE (DAY AND NIGHT): CLEANSER
Start by removing the oils and dirt from your face to prep your skin to receive some real lovin' (a.k.a some AMAZING, nutrient-rich products). If you wear makeup, we recommend using a remover wipe either before or after you cleanse to really get that stubborn foundation or eyeliner.
STEP TWO (DAY AND NIGHT): TONER
Don't skip the toner! What a lot of people don't know is that modern-day toners actually bring a lot of nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants to the skin. While your skin is clean and your pores are open, toner can effectively do it's job.
STEP THREE (DAY AND NIGHT): MOISTURIZER
For the day time, we always recommend a light, oil-free moisturizer. This product is super important because most of us do need extra that hydration after the damage that sun, weather and harsh chemicals wreak on our skin. At night, the skin does the bulk of its healing, revitalizing and regenerating as we sleep. This is why night cream moisturizers are generally thicker and heavier, designed to be absorbed over several hours.
STEP FOUR (DAY ONLY): SPF SUNSCREEN
The key to keeping your skin young and fresh is wearing SPF sunscreen everyday. Yes, every single day despite the season. Your skin can be harmed by constant sun exposure, whether or not you see a burn. Remember, sunburn is an immediate reaction, but damage from the sun occurs over a lifetime.
STEP FOUR (NIGHT ONLY): SERUM
Serums are extremely concentrated and nutrient-dense treatments. It's important to keep them close to the skin because they can specifically address a skin concern you might have. Some people apply multiple serums that cater to different skin concerns. If an all-in-one serum isn’t possible, apply the ones with the thinnest consistency first.
STEP FIVE (NIGHT ONLY): EYE CREAM
It's crucial to apply an eye cream at least every night, starting in your 20's. Maintaining the thickness of the eyelid and under-eye skin can ultimately make you look more youthful and well rested because eyelid skin can easily lose laxity and its smooth appearance if precautions are not taken.
STEP SIX (NIGHT ONLY): SPOT TREATMENT
If you ask us, spot treatments are a god send. Most of the time they contain medications that help fight acne and dry up the excess oil in troublesome spots. Allowing yourself to sleep the night with your treatment on your face (despite looking like a dalmatian) should result in smaller spots and clearer skin.
